Plastering

Fresh plaster onto bare brick, block or stripped walls and ceilings. This is the job when the old plaster has blown and come off, when an opening has been knocked through, or when a room has been taken back to nothing.

It goes on in two coats: a backing coat to build the wall up and get it straight, then a finish coat for the smooth surface you decorate. If the plaster you have is still sound, skimming may be all it needs. Send a photo, or we can come and look, and we will tell you which.

Skimming

A thin coat of finish plaster over a surface that is already sound. It takes out the ripples, old patches and tired texture, so the wall reads flat under the light instead of showing every bump.

Skimming walls and ceilings is the usual answer when the surface is firm but looks rough: a ceiling that needs a re-skim, walls patched too many times, or new plasterboard that needs its finish. It only works over a sound surface, so if the plaster underneath is loose or blown we will say so and quote for what it actually needs.

Dry lining

Plasterboard fixed to studwork, battens or straight onto masonry to form a new surface. It is how a new stud wall, boxed-in pipework or a lined-out old wall gets its face before it is finished.

Once the boards are up, the joints are taped and filled and the whole surface is skimmed, so it finishes like any plastered wall. For a quote, tell us what is being lined, roughly how big it is and whether the studwork or battens are already in place.

Artex cover-ups

Textured ceilings and walls brought back flat. The pattern is covered over and plastered across rather than scraped off, so you end up with a plain surface instead of swirls and points.

Skimming over an Artex ceiling leaves it ready to paint like any other plastered ceiling. Send a photo of the ceiling and the rough size of the room, and we will price covering it.

Patch repairs

Smaller repairs where plaster has been broken out — a wall chased for cables, a radiator or socket moved, a door handle put through it. The damage is cut back, filled and finished so it sits level with the wall around it.

Small plaster repairs and holes in plasterboard are worth a photo first. Some damage patches in neatly; sometimes the plaster around it has come loose as well, and more of the wall needs doing for a finish that does not show. We will tell you which before we start.

Insurance plastering work

Plastering carried out as part of an insurance claim — walls and ceilings put back after a leak, a burst pipe or a fire. Tell us what needs putting right and we will quote the plastering to match.

Photos of the damage help, along with which rooms are affected and whether anything is still drying out. Our quote covers the plastering itself; what your policy pays for is a question for your insurer. Send us the details to get started.

Rendering

Render onto the outside of a house, an extension or a garden wall. It goes on over brick or block to give a flat, even face that can be painted or left as it is, and it takes the weather instead of the masonry behind it.

The walls are prepared first, then the render is built up in coats to an even finish. For a quote, send photos of the walls, a rough idea of their size, and whether it is a house, an extension or a garden wall.

What is the difference between plastering and skimming?
Plastering builds a surface up from bare brick, block or a stripped wall: a backing coat, then a finish coat. Skimming is only the thin finish coat, over a surface that is already sound. Not sure which you need? Send a photo, or we can come and look, and we will tell you.
Can you look at a small repair?
Yes. Send a photo of the damage, whether it is in plaster or plasterboard, or we can come and look. We will tell you whether it can be patched or whether more of the wall needs doing.
Can you cover an Artex ceiling?
Yes. The texture is covered over and skimmed flat rather than scraped off, leaving a plain ceiling ready to decorate.
Do you do insurance work?
Yes. We quote and carry out the plastering needed after a leak, a burst pipe or a fire. What your policy pays for is between you and your insurer.
How do you protect the room?
Floors, fittings and anything staying in the room are covered before work starts. When we finish, waste, sheets and tools leave with us and the room gets swept out.
Do you do rendering as well as plastering?
Yes. We render the outside walls of houses, extensions and garden walls, over brick or block.
